The Christian Year: A Journey of Faith
The liturgical seasons of the Church help us walk through the life, ministry, death, resurrection, and continuing presence of Jesus Christ. Each season invites us to remember part of God’s story and to grow deeper in worship, Scripture, prayer, discipleship, and grace.
Advent
Advent is a season of waiting, hope, preparation, and expectation. During Advent, the Church prepares for the coming of Christ — remembering His birth in Bethlehem and looking forward to His coming again.
Season Colors: Purple or Blue — representing preparation, hope, waiting, and expectation.
Christmas
Christmas is a season of joy and celebration as we remember the birth of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. In this season, the Church gives thanks for God’s gift of love, salvation, and grace.
Season Colors: White or Gold — representing joy, celebration, holiness, and Christ’s glory.
Epiphany
Epiphany is a season of revelation and light. It reminds us that Jesus Christ is revealed not only to one people or place, but to the whole world. This season points us toward mission, witness, and the grace of God for all people.
Season Colors: White or Gold for Epiphany Day, often followed by Green — representing revelation, light, mission, and spiritual growth.
Lent
Lent is a season of reflection, repentance, prayer, fasting, and spiritual renewal. During Lent, the Church journeys with Jesus toward the cross, allowing God to search our hearts and renew our faith.
Season Color: Purple — representing repentance, preparation, humility, and spiritual renewal.
Holy Week
Holy Week is the sacred week from Palm Sunday through Good Friday and Holy Saturday. It leads us through Christ’s triumphal entry, the Last Supper, His suffering, crucifixion, death, and sacrifice for the world.
Season Colors: Red, Purple, Black, or White depending on the day — representing sacrifice, suffering, mourning, holiness, and Christ’s faithful obedience.
Easter
Easter is a season of resurrection, victory, joy, and new life. The Church celebrates that Christ is risen and that death does not have the final word. Easter reminds us that God brings life where the world sees endings.
Season Colors: White or Gold — representing resurrection, joy, victory, holiness, and new life in Christ.
Pentecost
Pentecost celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church’s mission in the world. It reminds us that God empowers ordinary people to witness, serve, love, and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.
Season Color: Red — representing the Holy Spirit, fire, power, witness, and the mission of the Church.
Ordinary Time / Kingdomtide
Ordinary Time, sometimes called Kingdomtide in parts of the Methodist tradition, is a season of growth, discipleship, service, and faithful living. It reminds us that following Jesus is not only for special seasons, but for everyday life.
Season Color: Green — representing growth, discipleship, life, and faithful service.

Walking Through the Story of Christ together
Through the seasons of the Church year, we are reminded that faith is not a single moment, but a journey. At Prospect Park United Methodist Church, we walk this journey together through worship, Scripture, prayer, service, and the grace of Jesus Christ.
