When Faith Leads the Way

Life often brings us to crossroads that are anything but easy. Moments when every option feels costly, when doing the right thing might break our hearts, and doing the comfortable thing might compromise our integrity. In those moments, we ask quietly, “God, what do You want me to do—and do I have the courage to do it?”
That is exactly where Joseph stood.
Matthew tells us that the birth of Jesus did not begin with a peaceful scene, but with a crisis. Joseph discovered that Mary, the woman he loved and pledged himself to, was pregnant, and he knew the child was not his. In a single moment, his plans, his future, and his joy seemed to collapse. What Joseph did not yet know was that God often births joy from the very places where our plans fall apart.
Scripture calls Joseph a righteous man (Matthew 1:19). Even before an angel appeared, Joseph chose compassion. His heart was breaking, but his character was still standing. And this is where joy begins in the life of a believer—not in the absence of pain, but in the presence of God within it.
Joy is not the absence of sorrow.
Joy is the presence of God in the middle of it.
As Joseph wrestled with what to do, an angel appeared to him in a dream and said, “Do not be afraid.” Fear is the enemy of joy. Fear says, “This is the end.” Joy says, “God is doing something new.” Before God gives direction, God gives reassurance—because divine joy cannot grow in a fearful heart.
What Joseph thought was a scandal was actually salvation. What he believed was the worst moment of his life became the doorway to the greatest joy the world would ever know. And when Joseph woke from the dream, Scripture tells us he did what the angel commanded (Matthew 1:24). Joy followed obedience.
Joseph did not just believe, he acted. He stayed. He protected Mary. He embraced a calling that made no sense to the world but fit perfectly into God’s redemptive plan. His quiet obedience helped usher joy into the world.
And sometimes the most life-changing acts of faith are quiet and unseen: choosing forgiveness, choosing integrity, choosing love, choosing to trust God with a future that does not make sense. These small acts of obedience sow seeds of joy that God grows into miracles.
As we enter Week 3 of Advent—the week of Joy, we remember that Joseph carried Jesus not in his body, but through his obedience. And now we are invited to carry that same joy into our families, our communities, and a weary world longing for hope.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for Joseph’s quiet courage and faithful obedience. In this third week of Advent, fill our hearts with deep and abiding joy. Help us trust You when life does not make sense and obey You even when the cost is high. Shape us into compassionate people who reflect Your love and carry Your joy into the world. Come, Lord Jesus. Make us bearers of joy. Amen.
